Learn to play guitar or bass from a well-established and very experienced music teacher. I teach all levels and all styles, especially rock (from pop to metal), blues, country and jazz. I also specialize in songwriting instruction and music theory. These are private one-on-one lessons, not group classes.
Beginners will learn to play chords, songs, and scales; how to read music; and how to improvise. They will also learn music theory and proper technique. I have many years of experience teaching beginning students.
Advanced students will learn to fully understand the fretboard and all its possibilities with the modes, pentatonics, chord structures and other transposable patterns. Advanced students can also learn alternate tunings, composition and improvisation over progressions that change keys.
For new students of an intermediate or advanced level who are considering taking lessons because they have musically found themselves in a rut, I can most certainly help. I can identify holes in students' knowledge very quickly, and suggest new concepts to students to inspire creativity.
I have played for 38 years, and I have 29 years of teaching experience. I am a good teacher, very patient, reliable and knowledgeable. Ten years of my teaching experience was at Portland Music Company. I am very affordable as well: $25/30-minute lesson. $25 is not an introductory price, this is my normal rate. (The going rate with other teachers is about $40 or more for a 30-minute lesson.)
I teach students ages 8 and up. Usually about half of my students are adults.
I'm close for residents of Damascus, Boring, Clackamas, Happy Valley, Sandy, Gresham, Fairview, Troutdale and East Portland.

"Randy is an excellent teacher. He is very knowledgeable and is willing to help his students learn according to their interests. His method of breaking skills down into modules has helped me grow from a beginner to an advanced guitarist who is releasing a solo guitar album. His love for music really shows in his teaching and has ignited my own passion for music and composition. I definitely recommend Randy for any guitarist, at any skill level."

"Randy is an incredible guitarist with years of experience teaching students at all levels. He has a real knack for explaining new concepts and demonstrating skills that makes learning fun and easy. You pick the genre and Randy will use it as a tool for teaching the skills you need to master. My lesson plans were customized to match both my skill level and learning ability, which made my progress much easier as I was always focused on the next logical step."

"I took guitar lessons from Randy starting as an absolute beginner at the age of 10, and continued lessons with him until I was in college.
Randy taught me not only how to play the guitar, but also how to read music, music theory, how to write songs and how to improvise.
As an adult I continue to play the guitar for my own enjoyment. I use the foundational understanding of music I learned from Randy to play along to the songs I love and to analyze how that music is written.
Playing the guitar and understanding music brings me a great deal of joy. Without Randy's instruction and encouragement as a child, I'm not sure I would be able to appreciate music in the same way I enjoy today. Thank you, Randy."

"I took my first lesson with Randy nearly twenty years ago during the most formative years of my musical journey. In the years that followed, Randy was not only an exceptional mentor musically, but a monumental supporter in my growth as a guitar player and a musician. A great teacher knows how to empower their students by understanding their goals, but also by applying their experience to push students in new directions. Randy embodies this role in a way where you will feel supported and will see indisputable results from the effort you put in."

"Randy instilled in me a passion and mind set for how to approach music and an instrument. He didn't show me how to play tabs or the current most popular songs, nor did he force me to learn how to read music. What Randy taught and gave to me was an innate understanding of how music works. He let me develop my own style without impeding my growth by just showing how to mimic sexy blues riffs. He gave me the building blocks and understanding to write my own riffs and fully express myself within music. I play guitar and use parts of what he taught me every day of my life. I went to three different guitar teachers before Randy and thought maybe music wasn't for me. I'm so glad he was recommended to me. I sincerely mean it when I say Randy's teachings so thoroughly shaped the trajectory of my life, I can't image where I would be without it."

"I didn't pick up a guitar until I was in my early 50s when I started taking lessons with Randy. Originally I just wanted to play something around the campfire. I enjoyed the lessons so much I found myself wanting to learn more, also taking music theory. It's so nice to have 1 on 1 instruction. Randy is well educated in music, very organized and has a wealth of knowledge. His teaching gave me the confidence to play with other musicians. Now I'm in my late 50s, and I play bass in 3 different bands and have performed live with each one of them this year.
It's never too late to learn to play guitar ... I can play for the rest of my life. Thank you, Randy!"

"I've known Randy for more than a decade now and have since come to hold his musical skills and teaching ability in high regard. Whether it's guitar, bass, keys, music theory or production, Randy has a wealth of knowledge to offer and the unique ability to not only communicate his knowledge, but to make the learning fun! Since becoming his student I've achieved things in my own musical career that I never would have thought I was capable of. Because of Randy's unique teaching style and ability to form long-term relationships with his students, I can safely say that I have no desire to be taught by anyone else. Randy is more than a teacher, he's a mentor."

"Randy Young is not only a guitar teacher, he is wonderful at enhancing the musical learning process by explaining music theory along the way. He was a big help to me, as his music theory explanations allowed me to write the music for my songs more creatively. I am thankful for his flexibility as we had to juggle a lot of different songs of mine on a regular basis. All in all, my collection of songs from day one to current have musically improved."

"Randy's teaching style incorporates both musical theory and practical applications of the concepts learned. Working with his students one on one allows him to create a custom curriculum for every person that matches their skill level and style. Players of any level can benefit from Randy's lessons as he focuses on finding each person's own particular sound."

"I have known Randy and taken guitar lessons from him for years. He is an experienced, motivating teacher at all skill levels. He is an accomplished performer and recording artist as well as a proficient music educator. His engaging lessons blend dynamic playing skills with essential music theory. His personal studio is both comfortable and technologically advanced to provide in-person as well as remote lessons. I highly recommend Randy Young as guitar or bass instructor."

"Randy Young has changed my life indefinitely.
Randy taught me how to create music. All the success I've had, and all the joy I feel while plucking those strings and singing was created once I met Randy.
He taught my best friend Chris in high school. Chris recommended Randy, and I noticed very quickly that the path I was taking to learning music was a different process than my good friend. As I have gotten older I noticed the brilliance that I experienced from our musical Sensei. Two people traveling on different paths ending up on the same road, " Music Theory Ave."
All I can do is thank Randy for personally changing my perspective on playing music. It literally gave me a musical advantage with my peers and still molds me today.
With Randy it's an everlasting stream of knowledge, you can never learn it all, you can only keep flowing, learning, growing, absorbing & evolving! Thank you, Randy."

"Randy Young taught me bass for about seven years, and during that time he carefully explained to me music theory, as well as gave me a tremendous understanding of my instrument. More importantly he taught me the successful habits that are key to being a good musician. Randy also showed me what a guitar player is looking for when playing with a bassist, and how to complement both the guitar and drums; while simultaneously shining through with my own musical voice to complement the song."

"Taking guitar lessons with Randy was a fantastic experience! My three years with Randy brought me from the barebones basics of guitar strumming and fingerpicking to advanced experience and understanding in music theory, barre chords, songwriting, and much more. His knowledge and experience coupled with his applied teaching style, visual aids, and jam sessions helped me flourish in my artistic abilities and appreciation for my instrument of choice and music in general."

"Randy is an amazing musician and music instructor. He has an extraordinary ability to structure lessons around my personal song preferences while balancing my skill level and the need to me to grow as a musician. My only regret is that I didn’t start sooner."
